Resident Evil 9: When will it be released and what to expect from the saga

Resident Evil 9, the new installment in Capcom’s classic survival horror franchise, was officially announced at the Summer Game Fest 2025. Along with revealing the release date, the company also released a trailer showing the game’s first footage. For over a year, rumors had circulated that the Japanese developer was working on a new chapter in the series. In 2024, the company confirmed development and revealed that production was being led by the same producer behind Resident Evil 7 (2017)—a title considered responsible for “reviving” the franchise. Now, the game has been officially unveiled as Resident Evil Requiem, confirming rumors that its storyline will connect with other titles in the franchise, such as Resident Evil: Outbreak and locations tied to the series’ earliest games. Trailer and release date of Resident Evil 9 Although the official announcement has only now arrived, Capcom had previously shared some details about the game. Resident Evil Requiem will launch on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

What to Expect from Resident Evil 9: Requiem Before the announcement, many fans speculated about the return of classic heroes from the series, such as Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, or Leon S. Kennedy. However, the protagonist of the new game is Grace Ashcroft, an entirely new character in the franchise. Despite this, she isn’t completely disconnected from the series’ universe; Grace is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, one of the playable characters in the lesser-known titles Resident Evil: Outbreak and Outbreak: File #2 (2004). Alyssa was a journalist for The Raccoon Press newspaper in Raccoon City—the site of the biological catastrophe that started the entire story of the games. She was among the few characters who managed to escape the city’s destruction, which occurs between the events of Resident Evil 2 (1998) and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999). The trailer reveals that Grace is an FBI agent sent to investigate a series of deaths at the Wrenwood Hotel, including the murder of her own mother. The footage also shows a destroyed Raccoon City, suggesting fans will return to the place where everything began. Alyssa appears in some flashbacks, indicating she will play an important role in the story. Apparently, she was investigating the events leading up to the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City, which might be connected to her murder. Classic locations featured in the trailer include: Raccoon City Police Department (RPD): the police station is one of the most iconic settings seen in the second and third games of the series; Mansion: the trailer shows a mansion that could possibly be Spencer Mansion, the main setting of the first title in the series, although it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet; Streets of Raccoon City: it’s also possible to see scenes of the city streets, which were heavily featured in RE 2 and RE 3. During the event, Capcom also confirmed that Resident Evil 9 will feature two gameplay modes: first-person and third-person. Furthermore, players will be able to switch between these perspectives during gameplay. Although there are scenes set in Raccoon City, it has not yet been confirmed whether Resident Evil: Requiem will primarily take place there or if the story will explore other locations. “Prepare to escape death in a breathtaking experience that will chill you to the bone. A new era of survival horror begins in 2026. Technological advancements combined with the development team’s vast experience result in a story featuring rich characters and more immersive gameplay than ever,” describes Capcom.
