New “Superman” earns over 1 billion Brazilian reais in its opening weekend

The new “Superman” film from Warner Bros WBD earned approximately $122 million (about R$ 680 million) to lead the weekend box office in the United States and Canada. This strong domestic debut marked the beginning of a new era for DC’s comic book heroes on the big screen. The film, which features David Corenswet as Superman, added $95 million (about R$ 530 million) in international markets, with global ticket sales expected to reach $217 million (about R$ 1.2 billion) by this Sunday (13), according to Warner Bros. “Superman” is a reboot of the film franchise based on the hero who first appeared in comics in 1938. The movie’s performance is crucial for the future of Warner Bros and its DC Studios division. Despite an ensemble of iconic characters like Batman and Wonder Woman, DC has not managed to match the box office power of Marvel’s superhero films from Walt Disney DIS.N. The new “Superman” was written and directed by James Gunn, the filmmaker known for three eccentric “Guardians of the Galaxy” films for Marvel. Gunn was appointed co-CEO of DC Studios in 2022, alongside producer Peter Safran, and pointed out as the hero who could bring consistent success to his film and TV projects. “Superman” aims to pave the way for upcoming DC productions, including a “Supergirl” movie and future Batman and Wonder Woman films. “DC’s vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s coming,” said Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav in a statement. “Superman” is one of only three films to debut with over $100 million in domestic ticket sales in 2025, while going to the cinema remains below pre-pandemic levels. “The domestic number is great. You can’t beat one of the top three openings of the year,” said Jeff Bock, senior box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations Co., regarding “Superman” results. He called the international ticket sales “concerning” for a big-budget action film. The film cost $225 million to make, according to a source familiar with the budget. Jeff Goldstein, president of global distribution at Warner Bros, said the studio was very satisfied with the domestic response and that the film about an American icon performed as expected abroad. “We always knew it would do better in the US than internationally,” said Goldstein. “Superman has always been very focused on the United States.” Gunn’s approach to the character received positive reviews. Eighty-two percent of the reviews collected on the website Rotten Tomatoes gave the film approval. Corenswet stars alongside actress Rachel Brosnahan from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as journalist Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as villain Lex Luthor. After box office failures last year, including “Furiosa” and “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Warner Bros recorded six number one openings in 2025. The studio is proud of the biggest domestic opening of the year with “A Minecraft Movie,” which earned $162.8 million in its first three days in April. The studio also delivered hits with “Sinners,” “Final Destination Bloodlines,” and “F1.” Some conservative commentators opposed “Superman” when Gunn said the film about a refugee from another planet was an immigrant story. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, posted a meme showing his face in place of Corenswet on a Superman poster. The director and stars said the film was a story about kindness and no political message was intended. “It’s just a movie, people,” said actor Nathan Fillion, who plays Green Lantern, to Variety at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles. Accumulated ticket sales for all films in the US and Canada were 15% higher than 2024, but 24% below pre-COVID times of 2019.
