SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) – In an awards ceremony without surprises, the Brazilian Academy of Cinema made “Ainda Estou Aqui” the biggest winner of the Grande Otelo award, the former Grand Prize of Brazilian Cinema, one of the main film awards in the country. The film won the awards for best fiction feature film, direction, adapted screenplay, actress, actor, cinematography, and all technical awards.
The ceremony took place last night, Wednesday (30), at the Cidade das Artes Bibi Ferreira, in Rio de Janeiro, and awarded 30 statuettes. “Still Here” won 13 of the 16 awards it was competing for.
Based on the homonymous book by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, “Ainda Estou Aqui” follows the story of Eunice Paiva, played by Fernanda Torres, a woman who fought for the recognition of her husband Rubens Paiva’s death during the military dictatorship period.
At the beginning of this year, the film won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. It was also nominated for the statues of Best Picture and Best Actress, with Torres.
Another highlight of the awards was “Malu,” by Pedro Freire, winning awards for best original screenplay, best first direction, and best supporting actress.
The award, presented by Isabel Fillardis and Bárbara Paz, also took a tour through the trajectory of Brazilian cinema around the world. At the beginning of the awards, the presenters mentioned important names for national cinema, such as Raul Roulien, one of the first Brazilians to act in Hollywood.
In addition to him, Carmen Miranda was honored in a performance that presented a reinterpretation of “O Que é que a Baiana Tem” sung by singer Duda Brack.
In addition, Brazilian films that competed for the Oscar were celebrated, with the showing of some scenes.
The night also included a tribute to producer LC Barreto, from Luiz Carlos and Luci Barreto, who was responsible for 150 titles of Brazilian cinema. At the age of 92, Luci received the trophy, mentioned the 60 years of the production company, and spoke about her husband’s struggle to recover from a fall. She also mentioned their participation in international festivals.
The first award of the night was the best sound track for Warren Ellis, from “I’m Still Here.”
Walter Salles went on stage to represent the British person, who could not attend the ceremony. “Warren found the nomination incredible. He considers Brazil the mecca of music. Being nominated by him among so many talented people was a gift.”
Fernanda Torres and Selton Mello, interpreters of Eunice and Rubens Paiva, won as best actress and actor for the film and praised the figure of the former congressman, killed by the Brazilian military dictatorship, and of his widow, the lawyer who fought for the recognition of the political assassination.
Torres, the Golden Globe winner, recalled that the film started in Rio de Janeiro and then traveled around the world. “I’ve been with Eunice Paiva for two years now. She has become my second nature,” she said.
The actress mentioned Selton Mello and recalled that he gave skin to Rubens Paiva, who was becoming a “faded photograph.”
By winning the award for best direction, Salles said that “Still Here” is a film about a country that was robbed of its future and this must always be remembered. “May more films about this period come.”
At the time of the series awards, Gabriel Leone, moved, dedicated the award for best actor in a fictional series in “Senna” to Breno Silveira, who died at the age of 58 in 2022 while directing “Vitória” with Fernanda Montenegro.
“Breno was a brilliant photographer and film director. He was a passionate person, a great artistic partner and friend,” he said.
Isaac Amendoim, 12, interpreter of “Chico Bento,” cried while thanking the award given to the film as best children’s feature. “I’m very happy, people. And a kiss, mom.”
Juliana Carneiro da Cunha, 76, winner of the award for best supporting actress for “Malu,” was applauded by the entire audience standing up, and in her speech, she paid tribute to her wife, Ariane Mnouchkine, 86, a French theater and film director. The founder of Théâtre du Soleil was in the audience at the awards ceremony.
