Three years after
Return of the Jedi
,
Mel Brooks
– the master of parodies – released his
pirated version of the space saga
, complete with a mall Darth Vader (oops, Black Helmet) and a Millennium Falcon that looked more like a giant vacuum cleaner. Now, almost four decades later (and in an era where Hollywood seems to breathe only through nostalgia machines), the comedy will get a sequel – because, of course, even satires need reboots these days.
One way or another,
S.O.S. – There’s a Madman Loose in Space
It’s back. Mel Brooks’ comedy gets a sequel, something few expected until the announcement made in June 2024. And the news doesn’t stop there: in addition to confirming the cast, there’s quite a surprise in store for fans.
The real bomb? The return of Rick Moranis!
Mel Brooks, director of the original, passes the baton to
Josh Greenbaum
(
Will & Harper
), but it doesn’t leave him out: he returns to the cameras in the iconic role of Yogurt, his hilarious parody of Yoda. However, not even his participation or the return of
Bill Pullman
like the hero Lone Starr—or even the debut of his son,
Lewis Pullman
(
Thunderbolts*
) alongside names such as
Keke Palmer
e
Josh Gad
(which he also co-wrote) — steal the spotlight from the main surprise of this remake.
The true impact is due to the return of
Rick Moranis
, the legendary Black Helmet, whose iconic villain left a mark on generations with his… well, helmet eight times larger than normal! The actor, away from cinema since
Brother Bear 2
, had built a memorable career in classics such as
The Ghostbusters
,
Little Shop of Horrors
e
Dear, I Shrunk the Kids.
His absence from the screens, however, had a deeply personal reason: after the death of his wife,
Ann Belsky
, in 1991, Moranis chose to gradually step away from sets to take care of his children, later dedicating himself exclusively to voice acting.
But the fans had already received a sign of his possible return. In 2018,
her voice appeared in an episode of The Goldbergs
, in which he revived the Black Helmet—and even toyed with the idea of a sequel to The Wild Stuff. At the time, it seemed like just a joke, but today it almost sounds like a premonition.
Now, the big question is: will Moranis appear clean-shaven in the new movie or will he stay behind the microphone, voicing a masked villain (à la…).
Mandalorian
, de
Pedro Pascal
)? The answer will only come in 2027, when Amazon MGM Studios finally releases the film in theaters.
What is the plot of the first movie?
The diabolical leaders of the planet Spaceball, having childishly squandered their precious atmosphere, devised a secret plan to steal every breath of air from their neighbor, the peaceful planet Druidia.
Thus, Spaceball’s dictator, President Skroob (Mel Brooks), sends the ruthless Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), the princess of Druidia, and demands King Roland (Dick Van Patten), her father, release all the air. Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and Barfolemew (John Candy) receive from Roland the request to rescue her, with Starr demanding one million space dollars for the rescue, as that’s how much he owes an intergalactic loan shark.
