Without humans or xenomorphs (for now): Predator – Remote Worlds draws inspiration from beloved science fiction and the desire to subvert the franchise’s rules

On the night of this Friday (25), the
20th Century Studios
held the panel of
Predator: Wild Lands
na

San Diego Comic Con

. The participants were surprised by a prank worthy of the franchise: just before the cast and crew went on stage, journalists, fans, and guests noticed through the big screen that they were being hunted. This happened right after they had received masks of the creature that carries the saga.

The creature that was in the middle of the hunt was none other than the possible antagonist of the plot, who appeared dressed and imposing for a few seconds. Shortly after,
Kevin Smith
, one of the great names of Hollywood, came forward to be the moderator of the panel. His words, impactful, energized the audience: “I saw Predator: Dead Space,” he said. “It’s incredibly f*cked! It’s the best Predator movie I’ve ever seen – and I’ve seen them all”.

Predator like never before seen

The director
Dan Trachtenberg
started talking about
Predator: The Hunt
, which revitalized the franchise a few years ago. “When Prey was released and people liked it, I started to realize: ‘Oh no, I need to decide whether I’m going to make more of these’,” he joked.

He continues talking, having observed the movie series in which the main character never wins. “I want to see if there’s a way to make it seem like a truly emotional and visceral journey, where you can connect with the Predator,” he said.

Elle Fanning
, interpreter of Android Thia, confirmed that there are no humans in the movie, besides highlighting the unlikely friendship between her character and the Predator. “I would say… I play two characters in the movie,” she revealed before praising the stunt team and the work of
Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi
, which gives life to the title-creature.

“Reading the script, what really captivated me were the heart and emotions… there are no humans. I am a synthetic android, he is a Predator. But there is so much humanity in these characters,” the actress added.

“This time, we really wanted to make sure we could go to exciting places that never happened in previous movies,” the director added when talking about how the Predator in this movie was built based on a practical suit, with fewer special effects additions, since the mask had a special development to make expressive movements.

Is Alien vs Predator 3 coming?

At the end of the panel, before showing 15 minutes of the movie, Dan Trachtenberg was asked about the project’s relationship with a possible new Alien vs. Predator. “That would be cool,” he said, reiterating that he was thinking about “very cool ideas” for this relationship between a robot and an alien.

“Perae, I know who builds robots,” he joked. The filmmaker commented that he found an elegant and coherent way to insert the Weyland-Yutani, the Alien company, into the movie, but that doesn’t mean all these cinematic ties say anything about the future.

Inspiration in Star Wars

But earlier, the director had already spoken about the inspiration of the new movie in Star Wars. During the panel, this information was revisited. In the movie, the synthetic android Thia is cut in half after fighting some kind of monster. She and the Predator make a kind of alliance, and thus he starts carrying what’s left of her on his back.

This dynamic is based on The Empire Strikes Back, specifically the scene where Chewbacca carries C-3PO during the escape from Cloud City. “That was the initial inspiration for this,” he said earlier to IGN. “Some people have influenced me over the years and definitely came together here,” explained Trachtenberg.

What is the story of Predator: Wild Lands?

The new chapter of the science fiction franchise will feature a young creature who was rejected by his clan. With his race being hunted, this time he will not be just a villain, because he will be forced to cooperate with Thia (Elle Fanning) to protect himself and save his life. With this goal in mind, they will have to improve their skills and carry out an important mission, which may be able to restore the respect of a people.

Predator: Wild Lands premieres in cinemas on November 6.
