The Lord of the Rings: When a Studio Defied Peter Jackson and J.R.R. Tolkien and Created One of the Most Legendary Prequels in Cinema

Who hasn’t gotten chills when
Galadriel
He said, “The world has changed, I can feel it in the water, I can feel it on the earth, I can feel it in the air”? The powerful introduction of
The Fellowship of the Ring
Prepare the ground for the epic story that will be told in three films, but few know that this was not how the movie was supposed to start.

For those who have read The Fellowship of the Ring, this introduction of Galadriel is nonexistent. In fact, the entire story of the One Ring told in these initial 7 minutes of the film is not part of the book, leading the reader to look for more information about this powerful artifact in the book’s appendices. But why did Peter Jackson decide to do this? Well, this came from the studio itself.

Detail in the opening scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was cut from the final version and revealed years later.

Second according to
Collider
, New Line Cinema, the studio behind the Lord of the Rings films, had asked Peter Jackson to create an introduction for the movie so that viewers would be introduced to Tolkien’s world. Initially, neither Jackson nor actor Ian McKellen agreed with this, as it would distance from Tolkien’s books. Jackson’s reluctance was so great that he left this task for the end of the production. However, it seems that he eventually enjoyed creating it, since New Line Cinema had only requested 2 minutes of prologue, and he ended up making 7 minutes.

Even though I thought it was better not to put it in the movie, the studio insisted, and in the end, it was
One of the best decisions ever made.
The powerful prologue narrated by Galadriel quickly recounts a bit of the history of Middle-earth, the rise of Sauron, the forging of the
Rings of Power
and eventually the do
A Ring
, the war that arose, the loss of the artifact, Gollum and even a part of
The Hobbit
, when Bilbo finds the item and keeps it. Thus, Jackson places the One Ring literally as the protagonist.

An accent, a fantasy and a dream: this was how Elijah Wood got the role of Frodo in The Lord of the Rings after competing with 300 actors.

Well, and for those who have never read The Fellowship of the Ring, how does the book start? Basically, we are introduced to the famous poem about the One Ring:

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky; Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone; Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die; One for the Lord of Darkness in his Dark Throne, in the land of Mordor, where shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in darkness bind them, in the land of Mordor, where shadows lie.

From there, we proceed to the description of the County and the 111th birthday of Bilbo.
