When
Gareth Edwards
showed the first cut of
Jurassic World: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
, the seventh film in the franchise that is
in theaters
and from which he is director, the
Steven Spielberg
, the filmmaker who originated the saga with
Jurassic Park – Park of the Dinosaurs
in 1993, he did it knowing that
I would accept all and every one of your contributions
.
It’s a nervous moment when you know that Steven [Spielberg] is about to call you to give his opinion on a movie you showed him. It’s like that moment you’ve dreamed of and feared all your life.
, said Edwards to SyFy.
You sit there thinking: ‘I will do everything you tell me. Every note you give me, I will do it’
.
And that’s exactly what happened, but he was surprised by the content of one of the notes written both by Spielberg and the original screenwriter of the film,
David Koepp
, who had returned to write the new chapter of the saga. According to Edwards himself, in an interview with Vanity Fair,
Steven Spielberg loves including references to other films, but he doesn’t like to refer to his own work as much.
:
The last [note] was: “By the way, remove all winks and references to all of Spielberg’s previous films and the Jurassic Park easter eggs”
It was one of those things where I disagree, agree, write and see what happens in the next few months
, confesses the director of
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
e
Resistance
, without hiding his disappointment, but ensuring that he perfectly understands their position.
Probably it looks like a snake biting its own tail. I wouldn’t do that if I were them. But since I’m not them, I’m a fan and I love their work, just like the rest of the world,
I feel that they are the only ones in the world who have a problem with it
”
.
So, Gareth Edwards began working on the next draft of Jurassic World: Awakening, taking into account the feedback from the veterans of the saga, which included removing as many references as possible. The director shared two of them in the interview:
First,
an introductory sequence that referred to the first scene of Jurassic Park
, when a group of velociraptors is brought into your area; second,
The appearance of Mr. DNA
, the animated character that explained the science that made it possible to bring back dinosaurs in a video for park visitors, which Alan, Ellie, Malcolm and company showed when they visited to endorse the project.
The beginning of the movie was with primates observing, the trees were moving and there were some monsters there. It turned out to be a giant excavator destroying the tropical forest. They were building the laboratory in the middle of the jungle, and then the prologue begins.
, explain the director how the production started in the first version.
By contrast, [Jurassic World] Dawn begins with the laboratory already set up and functioning, and an accident involving its various mutants and monstrosities leads to its eventual abandonment.
.
About the initial presence of Mr. DNA, according to Edwards,
We made a very rough version of that in an initial cut. And yes,
I got scolded for that
”
, adds, explaining that in the end, he decided to do
a kind of retro Disney documentary
.
However, Edwards managed to include some tributes, not only to the saga, but also to Steven Spielberg’s films in general, which would be hard to detect at first glance.
