“My problems with Ryan Reynolds were unsolvable”: ‘Deadpool’ action movie director reveals behind-the-scenes of the film

At the Annecy Festival, director Tim Miller spoke about the setbacks in his career, particularly his separation from Ryan Reynolds during the preparation of Deadpool 2.

Deadpool, the beginning of the tensions

“(…) After the San Diego Comic-Con, everyone realized we had something bigger than a small superhero movie in our hands. And suddenly, the stakes were higher. I think this had an effect on me, on the studio — which started treating me differently — and on Ryan. (…) He had been traumatized by Green Lantern, just as David Fincher had been with Alien 3. In short, it became very complicated to manage the pressure. Ryan and I had some disagreements towards the end of the film. But it started like a dream,” said the director.

As an example, the director cited the makeup test for the first film, which was a shocking moment for those present, as Deadpool’s appearance was very ugly without makeup. Regarding this, Miller said: “But that’s how he is in the comics! His ugliness is essential, it pushes him into a spiral of shame, and that’s what fuels the entire story.” On this, Ryan Reynolds was able to help with the character’s makeup.

If he had just a small scar, people would have wondered why he was acting that way. And they would have insisted: ‘No, that’s too much. You’ll ruin the movie.’ So, I sought out Ryan and explained why this was important,” Tim Miller recounted. “I loved Bill Corso’s makeup artist’s idea. And Ryan agreed: ‘I don’t want people to see Ryan Reynolds. I want them to see the character.’

But after the film was so well received by fans and with the success of the first work, the question of making a sequel arose, in which not everything went as well as in the first episode.

The reason for the removal

The first obstacle that Tim Miller encountered in preparing Deadpool 2, according to what he told Première, was that the film’s star, Ryan Reynolds, had a great fear of failure and wanted the movie to be perfect in every sense.

I never thought about doing a sequel because I thought my problems with Ryan were unsolvable. In fact, I never thought of it as my franchise; I immediately said, ‘Ryan is the face of Deadpool. I understand how this power dynamic works. Who is the easiest to replace in this equation? It would be me. So good luck with that.’ And the producer Emma Watts said I should come back. She did everything to fix things. So, I developed the character and we wrote an entirely new script. I did several previews, was super excited… and it all fell apart again because the tension was too much.

The director stated that he was prepared to discuss anything, determined to give his best for the film. However, his decisions were not in agreement with “the others,” and Miller did not feel that he had power over the film, which was the main reason for him to step away.

It’s clear that it’s the studio that pays me and puts up the money to make the movie, and I’m fine with that. You have to respect the hierarchy, but I would like to be second in command,” Miller told Première. “So, on Deadpool 2, I think I made the right choice by leaving. Although I probably lost 10 million dollars, I don’t regret that decision.

In the end, Deadpool 2 returned to David Leitch, who had just signed on for John Wick and Atomic Blonde. Tim Miller left to make Terminator: Dark Fate, which was a failure and put an end— for now — to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s saga.
