It is one of the most respected films by critics, but I would not watch it again.

Don’t misunderstand me, everyone has the right to watch and rewatch movies as many times as they want. However, there are some elements that make us rethink the need (or even the desire) to sit in front of the screen again to watch something that has already passed before our eyes.

This movie isn’t bad, in fact maybe it’s one of my favorites from recent years – which makes this whole situation even more complex -, but let’s get there! Winner of the Palme d’Or of
Cannes Film Festival in 2022
,
Triangle of Sadness
It is, without a doubt, a work that caused strong emotions in the audience and the critics.

Also nominated for the Oscar, the film follows the young models Carl (
Harris Dickinson
) and Yaya (
Charlbi Dean
, who are navigating the fashion world while trying to become influencers. They earn tickets to travel on a luxury cruise, being the only middle-class passengers in a group of millionaires, led by a communist drunk captain (
Woody Harrelson
)

A stormy night and pirate attacks cause the ship to sink, leaving the survivors stranded on a deserted island. The hierarchy within the group completely changes when among this bunch of rich people, the only one who knows how to survive in this inhospitable place is the Filipino cleaner – capable of fishing and making a fire.

Go and discuss this new dynamic that inverts the powers between the survivors and starts questioning gender roles.

One of the most divisive films in recent years

Following the trend of recent years at Cannes, Triangle of Sadness arrived at the festival with a mixed and shocking reception. Could a comedy with scatological elements win the prize? As we saw, the project proved to be provocative enough to win the main award of the 2022 edition and also had a good trajectory in the awards season.

Ruben Östlund has no fear of making a critique of delicate subjects while embracing a picturesque version of the shipwreck of
Titanic
It is a social satire that puts machismo, class struggle, capitalism, and beauty under a raw, direct, and bittersweet perspective.

The director gathers this team of eventually caricatural characters, exaggerated by absurdities, with a layer of scatology that exposes the trash in luxury. Although I like the film, it led to interesting discussions in the editorial office.

, for example, “Triangle of Sadness” is not a movie for people with, let’s say, a sensitive stomach.

There is a sequence that does not spare on the eschatological, and this, surprisingly, works very well in function of the type of cinema brought to the screen: by generating discomfort in the audience, it also literally exposes the rot of these people whose personality is entirely linked to money.

It’s a movie that everyone should watch at least once in their life. However, for many like me, it will be the first and only. Triangle of Sadness is available in the catalog of Max and Prime Video.
