40 years have passed since the launch of
Back to the Future
, the time travel movie that generated one of the most beloved science fiction trilogies in history. And, even after so much time, the title remains legendary.
The film is one of the key movies in Robert Zemeckis’s filmography, and its protagonists, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, will always be remembered for their charismatic characters: Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown, also known as Doc. Even now, a decade has passed since the saga visited “its future,” the trilogy continues to fascinate viewers.
Throughout the three movies, the creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale introduced all kinds of fascinating details and curiosities. However, as is often the case with science fiction films, and even more so when time travel is involved, the trilogy also has mysteries and inconsistencies that do not always have an explanation.
One of them relates to the McFly family photo that played a crucial role in the first film released in 1985. As you may recall, during his trip to 1955, Marty meets the younger version of his mother, Lorraine (Lea Thompson), and she is attracted to him, which interferes with her relationship with George (Crispin Glover). Therefore, bringing together his parents becomes Marty’s main mission in the film, because otherwise, neither he nor his brothers would ever be born.
The way the film alerts viewers to the situation is through a photograph that Marty carries with him. In it, the protagonist poses with his brothers, who gradually disappear until they finally vanish from the image.
Who took the photo and why?
However, although it is a visually fantastic resource, photography raises a question: if in this alternative reality the McFly brothers were never born, why was the photo taken only of a well? And who is that person? Why didn’t the photo disappear altogether?
The doubts don’t stop there. With George finally deciding to resolve the situation with Lorraine, the photo gradually fits back together, with the three children reappearing. However, in this new reality, Dave and Linda McFly should no longer appear in the photo with their original outfits. After all, as shown in the final scene of Marty’s awakening, the parents and their children had become more “elegant,” and therefore probably wouldn’t have posed in the clothes chosen by their “original selves.”
This choice was probably made to clearly show the audience that Marty can fix things. Moreover, if his brother and sister had reappeared in the photo already wearing their “suit, tie, and elegant shirt,” the surprise of the viewer during the final scene of awakening in 1985 would have been ruined. This, however, is an inconsistency, since this photo does not take into account a fact established by the narration.
Anyway, Back to the Future remains a classic — as well as the mysterious question: who took the picture?
