Ambitious plan: Star Wars was originally going to have 12 movies that would tell a completely different story.

The original trilogy and the prequel were created by George Lucas, and the six films resulted not only in what Disney now calls canon, but much more in the form of comics, books, and video games.

Lucas himself had much more in mind, originally planning to make twelve films. On the official website of
Star Wars
, you will find a
article
by J. W. Rinzler, editor of Lucasfilm, with handwritten notes from Lucas on his twelve-film plan, written in 1976.

A different Star Wars

Before we address Lucas’s ideas at that time, an important detail deserves to be mentioned: there were no concrete scripts for the twelve movies, but only a basic structure for a story that changed over the years and even during the filming.

After years of success, this is how George Lucas took revenge on a journalist who criticized the first film of the Star Wars saga

The twelve movies would consist of three trilogies and three “individual films.” Episode 1 was supposed to be a prologue for the “Clone Wars Trilogy,” which is what we know today as a prequel trilogy.

Episode 5 was then designed as a transition to the next three films, which basically represent the original trilogy. Episodes 9 to 11 would be the last trilogy, followed by a final film that would bring together all the threads of the story.

What would have changed in the first movies?

In the article, Rinzler cites some statements made by Lucas over the years, such as the fact that Luke and Leia being siblings was not originally planned.

Star Wars: George Lucas almost created a Palpatine series that those involved swear would have made him a “wronged sympathetic figure”

Moreover, Lucas had in mind a major battle in which Luke’s father would die. The fact that Darth Vader was Luke’s father was not part of the initial concepts of Star Wars. Therefore, the first films were not planned as the Skywalker family saga that exists today and should have told a significantly different story.

The Third Trilogy

Although many ideas from the twelve-film plan were included in the first two trilogies, episodes 7 to 9 were significantly different, mainly due to Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm.

The creator’s plan included two important stories for the final trilogy. On one side, Luke and his efforts to build a new Jedi order, and on the other, Leia, who wants to form a new republic from the rebellion.

What is the distance between Tatooine and Coruscant? Lucasfilm updates the Star Wars galaxy map, revealing that there’s still a lot to explore.

In fact, Lucas even passed these ideas on to Disney, which then took a completely different direction with Rey and Kylo Ren.

But many of the original ideas are still found in Star Wars. The Phantom Menace is a kind of prelude to the Clone Wars. The original trilogy corresponds more closely to the first vision, and basically, there is also the film connecting the two trilogies, Rogue One. Only the four last missing films have never been included in the current Star Wars canon.
