Considered the “first family” of Marvel, “Fantastic Four: First Steps” will mark the debut of the iconic comic book characters in the Marvel Studios cinematic universe. Starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, the film will launch Phase 6 of the MCU and provide a glimpse into what to expect from “Avengers: Doomsday,” the next blockbuster featuring Marvel’s superhero team. Like any great superhero origin story, the movie will show how a failed space mission brings cosmic consequences for Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). After gaining their powers, the group must learn to handle family life while facing a threat endangering Earth. “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is scheduled for theatrical release on July 24. What can fans expect from “Fantastic Four: First Steps”? Origin story with familiar villains As the title suggests, the film will focus on Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm trying to balance discovering their powers with personal lives and saving the world. The team will need to defend Earth from a cosmic threat called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his mysterious herald, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). The creature plans to devour the planet, just like in the comics, which could mean the death of many innocents. One of the main villains in Marvel Comics, Galactus was once human but became a cosmic being who feeds on planets to sustain his life and power. Additionally, the film will feature Shalla-Bal taking on the mantle of the Silver Surfer, quite different from her comic portrayal. Parallel universe Unlike other Marvel films, “Fantastic Four” won’t be set on the traditional Earth seen in previous productions. As previously introduced in the franchise, the story will take place in another universe, not the well-known Earth-616—and therefore, it won’t connect to events shown in earlier movies. The film will be set in the 1960s on a retro-futuristic planet with advanced technology, vastly different from films released in the 2000s. Not a reboot The Fantastic Four’s story has already been presented twice in cinema: first in 2005 with “Fantastic Four,” followed directly by “Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer” (2007); and again in 2015 with a new version of the team featuring Michael B. Jordan. Although “Deadpool & Wolverine” is part of the MCU and brings back some characters from older films, this new version of the team has no relation to prior movies. A fantastic cast In addition to Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach—well-known names in today’s pop culture—the film will include appearances by acclaimed actors. Ralph Ineson, known for roles in “The Witch” and “Nosferatu,” will portray one of Marvel Comics’ greatest villains never before seen in cinemas. Joining him are John Malkovich (“Dangerous Liaisons”), Paul Walter Hauser (“Black Bird”), Natasha Lyonne (“Poker Face”), and Sarah Niles (“Ted Lasso”).
